    Nice to be able to control opponent with the armlock so you don’t have to go to the ground incase there us multiple attackers.
    Also nice detail about engaging your hips as a prelimanry defense to the headlock

    My biggest take away this week is that there are very simple solutions to preventing common fighting techniques. Sometimes I get caught in BJJ with something and I feel helpless. Knowing that there is a a simple counter, such as connecting the hip, gives me confidence.

    Yes, I like the hip detail(s) as well, connecting and turning your hip. Previous times I was taught this missed the hip details and focused on arching back/leaning head back. Thank you Henry.

    Biggest takeaway this week is learning how to use my hips in the headlock defense, and how to drill it with a partner. Now time to practice!

    The hip detail is a MAJOR part of this technique that was left out when I was taught.

    Engaging the hip immiediately to avoid throws. Additionally, bending forward with the bully grip to break opponent’s posture.

    I love the basics showing up in here, Marry my hip to theirs for leverage, control their head to break spinal alignment and work the angle by cutting the 45 degree angle. I’ve made this so much more complicated than it ever needed to be.

    In addition to polish my basics in regards to standing headlock defenses I have to admit that Question #2 is misleading.
    In fact there is no prioritizing in the sense of “the most important element to prevent your posture being broken” between
    “Connecting your hips to theirs” and “Leaning your head back” (substitute for transfering energy to the back of the head)
    because both requirements are interdependent and equally important to successfully complete the given task of keeping
    the posture. One without the other is not working sufficiently. That means even with your hips connected to theirs your
    posture is likely to get broken without transfering energy to the back of the head (see troubleshooting starting at minute
    3.46 of Unit 18 – Preliminary Headlock Defense). In that sense one has to remember that the body of the snake always
    follows the head (see Discovery Channel). So one could possibly argue that the positioning of the head might be the
    most important factor based on descending cause-effect relation.

      I agree with everything you said. It was even mentioned in one of the videos that even with our hips engaged if your head is Leaning forward you will still have your posture broken.

    For me the continued emphasis on correct spinal posture and engagement. Also you didn’t call it out, but when you move into the opponent to jam the headlock, you are placing your head behind his shoulder where he is at a biomechanics disadvantage and can’t use his strength against you. Thanks!

    The biggest takeaway is utilizing my hips and maintaining posture. This seems to be the common theme in Jiu-Jitsu. Hips and posture utilized in the right way can make all the difference in your success of the techniques.

    My biggest takeaway was the importance of head and hip position in all of these videos. I know it’s true but it can’t be stressed enough.

    Biggest takeaway: Leverage AND the need to drill it. Leverage (hip position and legs lifting) is what helps the smaller fighter. I like fighting smarter, not harder. Yet without drilling and making this part of my reaction, I’m more likely to rely on strength when surprised. Need to drill to make this automatic and consistent. Thanks Henry!

    My biggest takeaway is the mechanics of the hip lift and maintaining proper posture in order to pick up an opponent when defending a headlock.

    Getting the corner of the hip connected and getting posture with the head back to keep the headlock from progressing to being in danger were my biggest takeaways.

    While hips are crucial so is head posture. Where the head goes the body will follow
